13 Burger Recipes That Make Any Backyard the Best Burger Spot

The best burger isn't always the one with the longest line. Some of my favorites have come straight off a backyard grill, eaten with both hands while everyone gathers a little too close, hoping the next burger is theirs.

After enough summers cooking outside, I've learned the secret isn't making burgers bigger or piling on endless toppings. It's getting the basics right: juicy patties, a good sear, and flavors that make people wander back to the grill asking, "Are there any more?"

These 13 burger recipes do exactly that, turning an ordinary backyard into the place everyone wants to eat.

Diner burgers taste so good because of that salty, crusty edge from a blazing flat top. You can use a screaming-hot cast-iron skillet at home to recreate that perfect restaurant crust.

Sweet Potato and Red Lentil Burgers

Many plant-based burgers feel like dry, heavy bricks instead of a fun cookout meal. I mix red lentils with sweet potatoes to keep the patty light but deeply satisfying.

Store-bought veggie patties usually taste like cardboard and crumble straight into the grill flames. Roast the sweet yams and rich garlic to keep these moist enough to beat any restaurant burger.

Most bean patties turn into a mushy paste because people do not dry the beans first. These quick patties bake for twenty minutes to get a firm bite that holds up to pickles.

Grilled Halloumi Burger

You do not need ground beef to get that savory, messy cookout experience. This thick slab of salty cheese gets beautifully warm and squeaky with a quick turn on the grates.

Heavy toppings will quickly turn a thin patty into a soggy, slippery mess. I shape the beef extra-thick so it can easily hold the rich bacon and avocado.

Potato and Chickpea Burgers

Most egg-free patties fall apart and drop straight through your grill grates. You can use leftover mashed potatoes as a natural glue to keep them whole and crispy.

Swapping standard bread for a giant mushroom cap keeps your dinner light and gluten-free. I stuff the grilled cap with beef to catch all the juices before they ruin your shirt.

Sautéed mushrooms love to slide right off your bun the second you take a bite. I melt Swiss cheese directly over the mushrooms on the griddle to glue them down.

Pan Seared Juicy Turkey Burgers

Lean turkey burgers usually dry out and taste like a disappointing compromise. Just mix a splash of olive oil into the meat to keep it incredibly juicy over the fire.

Bacon Blue Cheese Burgers

Salty bacon completely overpowers mild cheeses like cheddar, leaving your burger tasting one-dimensional. I crumble sharp blue cheese directly into the beef to hold its own against the smoky meat.

Traeger Smoked Burgers

High heat cooks beef so fast that you completely miss out on real wood-smoke flavor. I smoke my patties slowly first to build deep flavor before searing the outside.

Smoked Burgers with Caramelized Onions and Cheddar Cheese

You do not need expensive restaurant sauces to make your backyard burgers taste incredible. These loaded buns pair sweet caramelized onions with melted cheddar cheese to beat any local diner.

Go fire up the grill. I have a feeling your backyard is about to become everyone's favorite burger spot.
